   If you need the opinion of your friends, want to gather the thoughts of co-workers ,or need to conduct research for school, creating an online survey can be the perfect way to gather the information that you need.Creating an online survey is easy, and if you're not asking a lot questions, you can also do this at no cost to you or the survey participants.
    
2. Find an online survey-hosting site that suits your needs.
   • FreeSurveysOnline.com is one website that will allow you to create ("author") online surveys. The site lets you include up to 20 questions, to be answered by as many as 50 participants, and your survey can be posted for up to 10 days.
   • SurveyMonkey.com is another free online survey authoring tool. The free, basic package allows you to ask 10 questions to up to 100 respondents.
   • Google Docs has a spreadsheet program that lets your participants fill in opinions. You can email your survey to your friends and have them fill it out and send back to it you.
3. Select a free option available or upgrade to a more inclusive account. SurveyMonkey.com, for example, has three additional levels of service that range from 1,000 responses to unlimited responses, all of which include unlimited questions.
4. Sign-up for an account with the host that you choose. SurveyMonkey.com will be used to continue this example. You will need to create a user name and password as well as fill in pertinent information.
5. Click the "Create Survey" button in the top right corner of your landing page once you have successfully completed set-up.
6. Choose to create a new survey from scratch, or decide on one of the many template options available.
7. Begin to set-up your survey.
   • Choose your theme.
   • Add a page by titling the page and adding a short description.
   • Start adding questions by clicking the "Add Question" button.
   • Use the drop-down menu to select a question type. In SurveyMonkey.com you can choose single answer closed end, multiple answer closed end, open ended comment boxes and more.
   • Choose a format display option from the next drop-down menu.
   • Begin to author your question.
   • In the answer box, type out your answers on separate lines in order for the software to pick up and distinguish between responses.
   • Add additional pages and questions as needed.
8. Select the "Preview Survey" button to see what your survey will look like to your respondents, and then hit "Exit This Survey" to return to your editing page.
9. Select the "Collect Responses" tab when you are finished authoring your survey and are ready to distribute it. You can create a link to send to your friends, have SurveyMonkey.com email it to your friends, add it to your website or distribute it via Facebook.
10. Analyze your results as and after the responses come pouring in.
